Missionary Milestones

Here are just a few of the achievements of California Jesuit missionaries.

  • Japan, 1956: California Jesuits open Hiroshima Gakuin, a Jesuit junior and senior high school built with the generous support of benefactors in San Francisco and the Province. Today, the school counts approximately 7,500 graduates.
  • Taiwan, 1958: Philip L. Bourret, S.J., launches the Kuangchi Program Service (KPS), Taiwan’s first independent television production facility. KPS broadcasts have included Bible stories recast in the Chinese vernacular and documentaries on Asian migrant workers and Cambodian refugees.
  • Peru, 1959: Fred Green, S.J., and Jerome Bowman, S.J., go to Tacna to assume responsibility for the Cathedral Parish. More recently, Fr. Green has helped to build schools and homes, and encouraged benefactors and students from the University of San Francisco to establish computer labs in Tacna's schools.
