The Society of Jesus had been cultivating the study of music for nearly 200 years when in 1737 Jesuits arrived in Baja California, where they introduced choral singing.

Young man and woman sitting at microphone and switchboard Joseph F. MacDonnell, S.J., tells us The Oxford Companion to the Theater ties the development of drama, of the opera and of the ballet to the thousands of dramatic productions in Jesuit colleges. Some governments chose to build their opera houses on the Jesuit campuses.” In Latin America, Jesuits founded a music school in Brazil early on; during the 17th century, they integrated native music into their liturgies in Paraguayan missions.

Today, the California Province is home to two noted composers and musicians. Robert Fabing, S.J., an internationally known composer of liturgical music, has given concerts throughout the United States, Asia, Europe, and South America. Dan Schutte, composer in residence at the University of San Francisco and director of music for the Office of University Ministries, has composed many standard hymns of Christian worship worldwide. Schutte’s collaboration with the St. Louis Jesuits inspired many of his most well-known pieces, including Here I Am, Lord and Sing a New Song.
